بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Welcome to the Holy Month

RAMADAN
The Month of Mercy
& Forgiveness

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar — a blessed time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and drawing closer to Allah ﷻ. It is the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed, and its nights hold a reward greater than a thousand months.

🌙

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan (رَمَضَان) is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Its name is derived from the Arabic word ramida (رَمِضَ) meaning intense heat — symbolising the burning away of sins through fasting and devotion.

Why Muslims Fast

Fasting in Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Every adult Muslim who is able is obligated to fast from the true dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib) each day of the month.

During the fast, Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking, marital relations, and all sinful behaviour. The fast is not merely physical — it is a complete spiritual exercise of the soul.

Allah ﷻ prescribed fasting so that Muslims attain Taqwa — God-consciousness, piety, and a heightened awareness of His presence at all times.

Quran Revealed in Ramadan

The greatest blessing of Ramadan is that the Holy Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during this month — specifically on the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr).

The Quran describes this night: “Indeed We sent it down on the Night of Power” (Surah Al-Qadr 97:1). The revelation began in the Cave of Hira in Mecca when Angel Jibreel (AS) appeared to the Prophet ﷺ.

📚 Significance of Ramadan
Ramadan combines three unparalleled blessings: the revelation of the Quran, the Night of Laylatul Qadr, and the highest season for Allah’s mercy, forgiveness, and emancipation from Hellfire.

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183
Yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanū kutiba ‘alaykumus-siyāmu kamā kutiba ‘alal-ladhīna min qablikum la’allakum tattaqūn
“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you, that you may become righteous (attain Taqwa).”
Aye imaan walo! Tumpar roza farz kiya gaya hai, jaise tumse pehle logon par farz kiya gaya tha — taaki tum taqwa hasil karo.
📅
Duration
Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days based on the sighting of the crescent moon. The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, a day of celebration and gratitude.
🕌
A Month of Worship
Muslims increase acts of worship — Quran recitation, night prayers, charity, dhikr, and supplication throughout the blessed month.
🤲
Month of the Quran
The Prophet ﷺ would revise the entire Quran with Angel Jibreel every Ramadan. Muslims strive to complete at least one full recitation.
💝
Mercy & Forgiveness
Allah ﷻ opens the doors of His mercy wide in Ramadan. The sincere believer who fasts with faith and seeking reward has their past sins forgiven.

Virtues of Ramadan

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described Ramadan as the greatest and most blessed month of the year, filled with unparalleled spiritual rewards.

“When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the Shayateen are chained.”
— Sahih Al-Bukhari 1899, Sahih Muslim 1079
🚪
Gates of Jannah Open
All eight gates of Paradise are opened in Ramadan. The gate called Ar-Rayyan is exclusively for those who fast.
⛓️
Shayateen Chained
The major devils (Shayateen) are chained and restrained in Ramadan, removing their ability to whisper and misguide believers.
📈
Rewards Multiplied
Every good deed in Ramadan is multiplied manifold. A single Sunnah act carries the reward of a Fardh, and Fardh deeds carry 70 times their normal reward.
🔥
Freedom from Hellfire
Every night of Ramadan, Allah ﷻ frees people from the Hellfire. The du’a of the fasting person is never rejected.
Laylatul Qadr
Hidden within the last 10 nights is Laylatul Qadr — a single night of worship worth more than 1000 months (83 years) of continuous worship.
🤲
Du’a Accepted
The Prophet ﷺ said: “There are three people whose du’a is never rejected: the fasting person at iftar, the just ruler, and the oppressed.” [Ibn Majah]
مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ
“Whoever fasts in Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”
— Sahih Al-Bukhari 38, Sahih Muslim 760
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185
Shahru Ramaḍānal-ladhī unzila fīhil-Qur’ānu hudal-lin-nāsi wa bayyinātim-minal-hudā wal-furqān
“The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Quran was revealed as a guidance for humanity and as clear signs of guidance and the criterion.”
Ramadan ka mahina woh hai jisme Quran nazil kiya gaya — logon ke liye hidayat aur haq-o-batil ka farq karne wala.

Complete Fasting Guide

A comprehensive step-by-step guide to fasting in Ramadan according to the Quran and Sunnah.

1
Niyyah (Intention)
The intention for fasting must be made before Fajr (before the true dawn). One does not need to speak the intention aloud — a firm resolve in the heart is sufficient. The intention for Ramadan fasting should ideally be made at night or during Suhoor. Niyyah for fasting: “I intend to fast tomorrow for the obligatory fast of Ramadan for the sake of Allah.”
2
Suhoor (Pre-dawn Meal)
Suhoor is the blessed pre-dawn meal taken before Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Take Suhoor, for indeed there is blessing in Suhoor.” [Bukhari & Muslim]. Suhoor should be taken as late as possible before the Fajr adhan. Eating Suhoor is a Sunnah, not a condition of the fast.
3
Beginning of Fast (Imsak)
The fast begins at the time of Fajr (true dawn / Subh Sadiq). At this moment, all food, drink, and marital relations must stop. The fasting person should pray Fajr Salah and engage in worship during this blessed early morning time.
4
Breaking the Fast (Iftar)
The fast is broken at Maghrib (sunset). It is Sunnah to break the fast immediately at the time of Maghrib — do not delay. The Prophet ﷺ said: “People will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast.” Break the fast with dates and water, then pray Maghrib, then eat your meal.

❌ What BREAKS the Fast (Muftirat)

  • Eating or drinking intentionally
  • Sexual intercourse
  • Deliberate vomiting
  • Menstruation or post-natal bleeding
  • Deliberate ejaculation
  • Cupping (Hijama) — according to some scholars
  • Inserting substances into body cavities (nose drops, ear drops reaching throat)

✅ What Does NOT Break the Fast

  • Forgetting and eating or drinking (make-up not needed)
  • Rinsing the mouth (without swallowing)
  • Eye drops / eye ointment (majority view)
  • Injections (intramuscular/intravenous — majority view)
  • Swallowing saliva
  • Brushing teeth without toothpaste or with a miswak
  • Blood tests or blood donation (difference of opinion)
  • Unintentional vomiting

🌿 Sunnahs of Fasting

🌙
Eat Suhoor Late
Delay Suhoor as close to Fajr as possible to gain maximum blessing and strength for the fast.
🌅
Hasten Iftar
Break your fast immediately at Maghrib. Do not delay unnecessarily. Begin with an odd number of dates or water.
🪥
Use Miswak
Using the miswak (tooth stick) is Sunnah and does not invalidate the fast. The mouth of the fasting person is pleasant to Allah.
🤲
Increase Du’a
The du’a of the fasting person is accepted — especially at Iftar time. Make sincere supplications throughout the day.

🌄

Ramadan Salah Guide

The five daily prayers are the pillars of a Muslim’s day. Praying them with focus and punctuality is especially important in the sacred month of Ramadan.

🌅
Fajr — The Dawn Prayer
The most virtuous prayer of the day. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah.” Begin your Ramadan day with this blessed prayer.
☀️
Dhuhr — The Midday Prayer
Prayed when the sun passes its zenith. During Ramadan, use the time before Dhuhr to recite Quran and make dhikr.
🌤️
Asr — The Afternoon Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ warned strictly against missing Asr: “Whoever misses Asr prayer, it is as if he has lost his family and wealth.” [Bukhari]
🌆
Maghrib — Iftar Time!
The most anticipated prayer of Ramadan — it marks the end of the fast. Break your fast immediately at Maghrib, then pray the 3 Farz rak’ah.
🌙
Isha — The Night Prayer
Isha is followed by Tarawih prayer in Ramadan — the most special congregational prayer of the month. Do not miss it.
🤲
Witr — Seal the Night
Witr is Wajib (obligatory) according to the Hanafi madhab. Pray 3 rak’ah of Witr at the end of Isha or after Tarawih.

🕯️

Tarawih Prayer

Tarawih is the special night prayer offered exclusively in Ramadan after Isha Salah. It is one of the most beloved acts of worship in this blessed month.

مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ
“Whoever prays (Qiyam) during Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping for reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.”
— Sahih Al-Bukhari 37, Sahih Muslim 759

How Many Rakats?

There are two scholarly positions regarding the number of Tarawih rak’ah:

8 Rak’ah Position
Based on hadith in Bukhari and Muslim — the Prophet ﷺ prayed 8 rak’ah of night prayer (Tahajjud/Tarawih). This is the view of many contemporary scholars and is the practice of Ahlus-Sunnah.
20 Rak’ah Position
Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) who established the congregation of 20 rak’ah Tarawih. This is the Hanafi, Shafi’i, and Hanbali position and is the practice in Masjid al-Haram and al-Nabawi.

Both positions are valid. One should follow the local mosque’s practice or their madhab.

How to Pray Tarawih

1
After Isha Salah
Pray Isha (4 Farz + 2 Sunnah + 2 Sunnah) first. Then begin Tarawih.
2
2 Rak’ah at a Time
Tarawih is prayed in sets of 2 rak’ah. After each 2, make salaam and rest briefly.
3
Recite Quran
The imam recites the Quran aloud. The goal is to complete the entire Quran over 30 nights.
4
End with Witr
After Tarawih (8 or 20 rak’ah), conclude the night with 3 rak’ah of Witr prayer.

Qiyam-ul-Layl / Tahajjud

The voluntary night prayer — one of the most rewarding acts of worship in Islam, especially in the last 10 nights of Ramadan.

What is Qiyam-ul-Layl?

Qiyam-ul-Layl (قيام الليل) literally means “standing in the night.” It refers to any voluntary prayer performed after Isha and before Fajr. When performed after sleeping, it is called Tahajjud.

In Ramadan, the last third of the night is the most blessed time. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Our Lord descends each night to the lowest heaven and says: Who is supplicating Me so I can answer? Who is asking Me so I can give? Who is seeking forgiveness so I can forgive?” [Bukhari]

“The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer (Qiyam-ul-Layl).”
— Sahih Muslim 1163

How to Perform Tahajjud

1
Sleep then Wake
Ideally, sleep after Isha then wake before Fajr — in the last third of the night.
2
Make Wudu
Perform fresh wudu with mindfulness and intention of worshipping Allah.
3
Pray 2+ Rak’ah
Minimum 2 rak’ah. You may pray as many as you wish in sets of 2. Recite slowly with reflection.
4
Make Du’a
After prayer, make sincere, heartfelt du’a. This is one of the best times for du’a to be accepted.

🌟

Laylatul Qadr — Night of Power

The most important night in the entire Islamic year — a single night of worship better than 1000 months.

Surah Al-Qadr 97:1-5
Innā anzalnāhu fī laylатil-qadr. Wa mā adrāka mā laylatul-qadr. Laylatul-qadri khayrum min alfi shahr.
“Indeed We sent it (the Quran) down on the Night of Power. And what will make you know what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.”
Beshak Humne Quran ko Laylatul Qadr mein naazil kiya. Aur tujhe kya pata kya hai Laylatul Qadr? Laylatul Qadr hazaar mahinon se behtar hai.

Signs of Laylatul Qadr

  • The night is peaceful, calm, and serene
  • It is not too hot nor too cold
  • The sun rises on the morning after without strong rays — white, mild
  • The believer’s heart feels an extraordinary peace and closeness to Allah
  • Angels descend upon Earth on this night

When is Laylatul Qadr?

It is hidden in the odd nights of the last 10 nights of Ramadan: 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last 10 nights of Ramadan.” [Bukhari]

Many scholars believe it falls most likely on the 27th night, though it may shift each year. Seek it on all 5 odd nights to be certain.

What to Do on These Nights

  • Increase Salah — especially Tahajjud
  • Recite the Quran with reflection (tadabbur)
  • Make prolonged, sincere du’a
  • Recite abundant Istighfar (forgiveness)
  • Give charity (Sadaqah)
  • Make Itikaf in the mosque (last 10 days)
  • Recite the special Laylatul Qadr dua

The Blessed Du’a of Laylatul Qadr

Aisha (RA) asked: “O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylatul Qadr, what should I say?” He replied: Say this:

✨ Laylatul Qadr Special Dua
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

“O Allah, You are the Pardoner, You love to pardon, so pardon me.”
Aye Allah! Tu maaf karne wala hai, maafi ko pasand karta hai — mujhe maaf farma de.
— Narrated by Aisha (RA) | Tirmidhi 3513, Ibn Majah 3850 — Sahih

Allāhumma innī a’ūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazani wa a’ūdhu bika minal-‘ajzi wal-kasal
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness.
Aye Allah! Main gham aur sadma se teri panah manga hoon, aur aajzi aur sasti se bhi teri panah manga hoon.
Seeking Tawbah
Allāhumma anta rabbī lā ilāha illā anta khalaqtanī wa anā ‘abduka wa anā ‘alā ‘ahdika wa wa’dika mastaṭa’tu
O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity except You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am upon Your covenant and promise as best I can.
Aye Allah! Tu mera Rabb hai, tere siva koi mabood nahi. Tu ne mujhe banaya, main tera banda hoon, teri ahad par qayam hoon jitna mujhse ho sake.

💚 Forgiveness & Istighfar Duas
Sayyid al-Istighfar
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
Astaghfirullāhal-ladhī lā ilāha illā Huwal-ḥayyul-qayyūmu wa atūbu ilayh
I seek forgiveness from Allah — He besides Whom there is none worthy of worship, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining — and I turn to Him in repentance.
Main Allah se maafi manga hoon — jiske siwa koi mabood nahi, jo zinda hai, qaim hai — aur main uski taraf ruju karta hoon.
Short Istighfar
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الْغَفُورُ
Rabbigh-fir lī wa tub ‘alayya innaka antal-tawwābul-ghafūr
My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed You are the Oft-Forgiving, the All-Forgiving.
Aye mere Rabb! Mujhe maaf kar aur meri tawbah qubool kar. Beshak Tu hi tawba qabool karne wala aur bahut ghafar karne wala hai.

Women in Ramadan

Islam has provided complete and compassionate guidance for women’s worship during Ramadan, with ease and mercy in all situations.

🩸
Menstruation (Haydh)
A woman experiencing her menstrual period does NOT fast. This is mandatory — fasting during menstruation is forbidden. She must make up the missed fasts (Qadha) after Ramadan before the next Ramadan arrives. She also does not pray Salah during this period.
🍼
Post-Natal Bleeding (Nifas)
Women in nifas (post-childbirth bleeding) are exempt from fasting and prayer, similar to haydh. The missed fasts must be made up afterwards at a time of ease and health.
🤰
Pregnancy
A pregnant woman who fears harm to herself or the baby may break her fast. According to most scholars, she makes up the missed fasts (Qadha) without needing to pay kaffarah. She should consult a doctor and a trusted scholar.
👶
Breastfeeding
A breastfeeding mother who fears for her own health or her baby’s health may break the fast. The majority opinion is that she makes up the missed fasts only. Some scholars add fidyah — consult your madhab.
🤲
Worship for Women
A woman in her menses can still engage in dhikr, listening to the Quran, making du’a, giving charity, attending Islamic lectures, and any acts of worship not requiring purity.
📅
Making Up Missed Fasts
Qadha fasts must be completed before the next Ramadan arrives. If one cannot, fidyah (feeding a needy person per day) may be paid with scholarly guidance. The sooner they are made up, the better.

Ramadan for Children

Ramadan is a wonderful opportunity to nurture Islamic values, habits, and love of worship in our children from an early age.

Introducing Fasting to Children

Fasting is not obligatory for children before puberty (bulugh). However, the Sahabah would encourage their children to fast half-days or shorter periods to gradually build the habit.

Encourage children to try fasting for part of the day and celebrate their effort generously. Never force fasting on a young child — instil love and curiosity, not burden.

  • Age 7–10: Try a few days of fasting (half-day or full day if able)
  • Age 10–12: Encourage regular fasting with parental monitoring
  • Age 12+: Puberty begins — fasting becomes obligatory upon maturity

Ramadan Activities for Kids

  • Make a Ramadan countdown calendar together
  • Learn and memorise short Surahs for Salah
  • Join Tarawih at the mosque with the family
  • Help prepare Suhoor and Iftar
  • Learn the Arabic alphabet and short duas
  • Participate in charity — donate toys, clothes, or money
  • Read or listen to Quran stories together
  • Create an Eid crafts corner for decoration
  • Keep a personal Ramadan journal or goal chart

Islamic Manners to Teach in Ramadan

🤝

Honesty
Teach that fasting includes honesty in speech — no lying, cheating, or backbiting.

💝

Kindness
Extra kindness to family and neighbours during Ramadan builds lifelong habits.

📖

Quran
Encourage even 5 minutes of Quran reading daily — consistency is rewarded greatly.

🕌

Salah
Pray all five prayers together as a family — children learn through observation.

💰

Zakat & Charity in Ramadan

Charity in Ramadan carries multiplied rewards. Zakat al-Fitr is an obligation upon every Muslim before Eid al-Fitr.

Zakat in Ramadan

While Zakat (the annual obligatory charity — 2.5% of eligible wealth) can be paid at any time of year, many Muslims choose to pay it in Ramadan to earn the multiplied rewards of this blessed month.

Zakat is the Third Pillar of Islam. It is obligatory on every Muslim who possesses nisab (minimum threshold of wealth) for a full lunar year.

Who Pays Zakat?

  • Adult Muslim (male or female)
  • Of sound mind
  • Possessing nisab (value of 85g gold or 595g silver)
  • Wealth owned for a full lunar year (hawl)

Zakat al-Fitr

Zakat al-Fitr (Sadaqat al-Fitr) is an obligatory charity due from every Muslim — male, female, young, or old — at the end of Ramadan before Eid al-Fitr prayer.

~2.5 kg
of staple food per person
(rice, wheat, dates, or its monetary equivalent)

When to Give

  • Best: Before Eid al-Fitr prayer
  • Permissible: 1-2 days before Eid
  • To be given: to poor and needy Muslims
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory — a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenities, and to feed the poor.”
— Abu Dawud 1609, Ibn Majah 1827

🌿

Ramadan Etiquette & Adab

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.” [Bukhari]

😤

Control Anger
If someone provokes you while fasting, say: “I am fasting, I am fasting.” Control the nafs — Ramadan is a training ground for the soul.

🗣️

Guard the Tongue
Avoid gossip (gheebat), backbiting, lying, arguments, and vain speech. Every word is recorded.

📖

Increase Quran
Aim to complete one Quran or more. Even 1 page a day is blessed — consistency matters more than quantity.

💸

Give Charity Daily
The Prophet ﷺ was most generous in Ramadan. Give something in charity every single day, however small.

🤲

Increase Du’a
Du’a is the weapon of the believer. Make abundant heartfelt supplications — especially in the last third of the night and at Iftar.

👁️

Lower the Gaze
Guard your eyes from what is forbidden. The fast includes the eyes, ears, tongue, and heart — not only the stomach.

📱

Reduce Screen Time
Replace idle scrolling with dhikr, Quran, Islamic reading, or family time. Ramadan is too precious to waste on entertainment.

🕌

Attend the Mosque
Pray in congregation at the mosque when possible. The reward of congregational prayer is 27 times that of praying alone.

📆

Ramadan FAQ

Answers to the most commonly asked questions about fasting in Ramadan, based on authentic Islamic scholarship.

What are the things that break the fast?
Eating or drinking intentionally, sexual intercourse, deliberate vomiting (if possible to hold back), menstruation or post-natal bleeding, deliberate ejaculation, and reaching the stomach via body cavities (e.g. nose drops reaching the throat). If something invalidates the fast, one must make it up (Qadha) after Ramadan.
Can I brush my teeth while fasting?
Using a dry toothbrush or miswak (tooth stick) is permissible and Sunnah during fasting. Using toothpaste is disliked (makruh) by many scholars due to its flavour and the risk of swallowing. If toothpaste is used and none is swallowed, the fast remains valid. Using a miswak is the safest and most Sunnah option.
Can I swallow my own saliva while fasting?
Yes, swallowing natural saliva does not break the fast. There is scholarly consensus on this. However, if saliva has a foreign substance mixed in (e.g. food residue from the mouth), it should not be swallowed deliberately.
Are injections allowed during fasting?
Intramuscular and intravenous injections that are purely medicinal (not nutritive) do not break the fast according to the majority of contemporary scholars (including the fatawa of major Islamic institutions). Nutritive IV drips, however, do break the fast according to most scholars.
Is wearing perfume or using scented products allowed?
Using perfume, cologne, or scented products externally does not break the fast. However, deliberately inhaling incense smoke or perfume vapour into the lungs is disliked and considered potentially invalidating by some scholars. External use on the skin or clothes is perfectly fine.
What if someone forgets and eats or drinks?
The fast is NOT broken if one eats or drinks due to forgetfulness. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever forgets he is fasting and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it is Allah who fed him and gave him to drink.” [Bukhari & Muslim]. Upon remembering, one should stop immediately and continue the fast.
Can a traveller break their fast?
Yes. A traveller (musafir) covering a journey distance of approximately 77–80 km or more may break their fast. This is a Quranic concession (Surah Baqarah 2:184). The missed days must be made up after Ramadan. It is better to fast if fasting does not cause hardship, and better to break if it does.
Can I use eye drops while fasting?
The majority opinion among contemporary scholars is that eye drops do not break the fast, even if a slight taste is felt at the back of the throat, because the eye is not a normal route to the stomach. Some Hanbali scholars take precaution. For safety, use eye drops at Suhoor or Iftar time if possible.
What if I am too ill to fast in Ramadan?
A person who is ill and fears that fasting will harm their health may break their fast. Allah ﷻ says: “Whoever is ill or on a journey — then an equal number of other days” (Surah Baqarah 2:185). Missed fasts are made up after recovery. A chronically ill person who cannot fast at all pays fidyah (feeding one poor person per missed day).
When is the Niyyah (intention) for fasting made?
For obligatory (Ramadan) fasting, the intention must be made before the break of dawn (Fajr). The Maliki and Shafi’i schools require the intention to be renewed each night. The Hanafi school allows a single intention for the whole month made on the first night, but renewing it each night is the most cautious and preferred practice.
