فَضْلُ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ

The Supreme Importance of Juma

Friday is the best day of the week, the day Allah chose for the Muslims. It is the master of all days, superior to Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. On this day, Adam (عليه السلام) was created, entered Paradise, and left it. The Day of Judgment will also occur on a Friday.

  • The Best Day of the Week: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it." (Sahih Muslim 854)
  • Obligatory for Muslim Men: Attending Juma prayer is Fard (obligatory) upon every adult, sane, resident Muslim male. Missing it without valid excuse is a major sin.
  • The Hour of Acceptance: There is a blessed hour on Friday when Allah accepts every dua made by a Muslim. The majority of scholars say it occurs during the last hour before Maghrib or while the Imam delivers the Khutba.
  • Sins Are Forgiven: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever performs Wudu properly, then comes to Juma prayer, listens attentively and keeps silent, his sins between that Friday and the previous Friday will be forgiven, plus three more days." (Sahih Muslim 857)
  • Reward Like Giving Charity: Coming early to Juma earns tremendous reward. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever performs Ghusl on Friday, comes early, sits close to the Imam, listens attentively and does not engage in idle talk, for every step he takes he will have the reward of fasting and praying for one year." (Sunan Abu Dawud 345)
  • Angels Record Names: Angels stand at the doors of the mosque on Friday morning, recording who comes first, second, third, and so on. When the Imam sits on the pulpit, they close their records and come to listen to the Khutba. (Sahih Bukhari 929)
  • Charity on Friday: The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best charity is that given on Friday." Every good deed on Friday carries extra reward and blessings.
  • Protection from Hypocrisy: The Prophet ﷺ warned, "Whoever misses three Juma prayers out of negligence, Allah will seal his heart." (Sunan Abu Dawud 1052) Regular attendance protects from spiritual darkness.
  • Elevated Status: Those who attend Juma regularly with proper etiquette are raised in ranks, their sins are forgiven, and their faces shine with Nur (light) on the Day of Judgment.
  • Better Than Eid: Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said, "This day of Juma is something Allah has made obligatory upon you. So whoever witnesses it should perform Ghusl, apply perfume if available, and use Miswak."
  • Day of Gathering: On the Day of Judgment, all nations will be gathered, but Muslims will be the first to be called because they honored Friday in this world.
  • Complete Forgiveness: The Prophet ﷺ said, "The five daily prayers, from one Juma to the next, are expiation for whatever sins come in between, as long as one avoids major sins." (Sahih Muslim 233)

English: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever performs Ghusl on Friday and causes others to do Ghusl (by his example), then goes early and arrives early, walks and does not ride, sits close to the Imam, listens attentively and does not engage in idle talk - for every step he takes, he will have the reward of fasting and praying (Qiyam) for one year."

Rasool Allah ﷺ ne farmaya: Jo shakhs Juma ke din Ghusl kare aur doosron ko bhi Ghusl karaye, phir jaldi nikle aur jaldi pahunche, paidal chale aur sawari na kare, Imam ke qareeb baithe, ghaur se sune aur lagw baat na kare to use har qadam ke badle ek saal ke rozay aur qiyam ka sawab milega.

خُطْبَةُ الْجُمُعَةِ

Juma Khutba (Friday Sermon)

The Khutba is the sermon delivered by the Imam before the Juma prayer. It consists of two parts (Khutbas) separated by a brief sitting. The Khutba is an essential pillar of Juma prayer - without it, the Juma prayer is not valid. During the Khutba, it is obligatory to listen attentively and strictly forbidden to talk, use mobile phones, or engage in any activity whatsoever.

Structure & Components of Khutba

  • First Khutba: The Imam stands, praises Allah (Hamd), sends blessings on Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Durood), recites a verse from the Quran, gives advice and reminder (Naseeha) to the congregation, and addresses current issues facing Muslims.
  • Brief Sitting (Juloos): The Imam sits down briefly between the two Khutbas. This is a Sunnah that distinguishes Friday Khutba from other speeches.
  • Second Khutba: The Imam stands again, continues with more advice, makes comprehensive duas for all Muslims worldwide, supplicates for Muslim rulers and leaders, and concludes with final reminders.
  • Iqamah & Prayer: After completing both Khutbas, the Imam descends from the pulpit, Iqamah is called, and the congregation prays 2 Rakats of Juma Fard prayer together.

Etiquettes & Rules During Khutba

  • Complete Silence is Obligatory: Speaking during the Khutba is strictly forbidden. Even saying "Be quiet" to someone or "Ameen" loudly is prohibited. The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you say to your companion 'Be quiet' while the Imam is giving Khutba, you have engaged in idle talk." (Sahih Bukhari 934)
  • No Mobile Phones: Turn off or silence your mobile phone before the Khutba begins. Using it during Khutba nullifies the reward of your Juma prayer.
  • Listen Attentively: Focus completely on what the Imam is saying. This listening is an act of worship. The Prophet ﷺ said, "When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to be quiet and listen, you have engaged in idle talk." (Sahih Muslim 851)
  • Face the Imam: Turn your face and body towards the Imam delivering the Khutba. Do not turn away or face other directions.
  • No Dhikr or Tasbeeh: Do not engage in verbal dhikr, reciting tasbeeh, reading Quran, or any other act during the Khutba. Just listen.
  • No Greeting (Salam): Do not give or return Salam during the Khutba. If someone gives you Salam, gesture with your hand but do not speak.
  • No Eating or Drinking: Do not eat, drink, or chew gum during the Khutba. Wait until after the prayer.
  • If You Enter Late: If you arrive while the Imam is giving Khutba, quickly pray 2 Rakats of Tahiyyatul Masjid (very brief), then sit and listen. Do not miss this 2 Rakat Sunnah even if Khutba has started.
  • Stay Seated: Remain seated throughout the Khutba. Do not get up, stretch, or move around unless absolutely necessary.
  • Control Children: Keep children quiet and calm during the Khutba. If they cry or make noise, take them outside temporarily.
  • Make Silent Dua: You can make silent dua in your heart while listening to the Khutba. This is the blessed hour when duas are accepted.
  • Show Respect: The Khutba is a form of Dhikr (remembrance of Allah). Show it the same respect you would show to Quranic recitation.

Special Note About the Blessed Hour

The majority of scholars state that the blessed hour when Allah accepts every dua occurs during one of two times on Friday: (1) While the Imam is giving the Khutba, or (2) The last hour before Maghrib. Therefore, make abundant dua during the Khutba silently in your heart, and also dedicate the time before Maghrib for special supplications. This is your golden opportunity to have your prayers answered!

صَلَاةُ النَّوَافِلِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ

Nafl (Voluntary) Prayers on Friday

Prayers Before Juma (Qablal Juma)

There is no fixed Sunnah prayer before the Juma prayer. However, scholars strongly recommend praying Nafl (voluntary) prayers from the time you enter the mosque until the Imam begins the Khutba. These Nafl prayers can be 4, 6, or 8 Rakats, prayed in sets of 2 Rakats each.

  • Tahiyyatul Masjid (2 Rakats): When you enter the mosque, first pray 2 Rakats of Tahiyyatul Masjid (greeting the mosque). This is strongly recommended and should not be skipped even if the Khutba has already started.
  • 4 Rakats Nafl: After Tahiyyatul Masjid, you can pray 4 Rakats of Nafl (2+2) before the Khutba begins. These are highly rewarded.
  • 6 or 8 Rakats if Early: If you arrive very early, you can pray up to 6 or 8 Rakats total (all in sets of 2 Rakats each) to maximize your reward.
  • Recitation in Nafl: In these Nafl prayers, you can recite any Surah after Al-Fatiha. Common practice is to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, or other short Surahs.
  • Sit Close After Nafl: After completing your Nafl prayers, sit as close as possible to the Imam and engage in dhikr, Quran recitation, or silent dua until the Khutba begins.

Prayers After Juma (Ba'dal Juma)

After completing the 2 Rakat Fard of Juma prayer, there are established Sunnah prayers to be performed. The Prophet ﷺ regularly prayed Sunnah after Juma.

  • 4 Rakats Sunnah Muakkadah (Emphasized): The Prophet ﷺ used to pray 4 Rakats after Juma prayer in the mosque. These are prayed in 2 sets of 2 Rakats each. This is Sunnah Muakkadah (emphasized Sunnah) that should not be missed.
  • 2 Rakats Sunnah (Alternative Opinion): Some scholars also mention 2 Rakats as Sunnah after Juma if prayed at home. The 4 Rakats in the mosque is more emphasized.
  • 2 Rakats Nafl (Additional): After the Sunnah, you can pray an additional 2 Rakats of Nafl if you wish to earn extra reward.
  • Method: All these prayers after Juma are prayed silently (not loudly). Each 2 Rakats is prayed separately with Tashahhud and Salam.
  • Total Recommended After Juma: Minimum 4 Rakats Sunnah (2+2), Optional additional 2 Rakats Nafl. Total 6 Rakats maximum as regular practice.

📖 Sahih Bukhari 937, Sahih Muslim 881

صَلَاةُ الْجُمُعَةِ - التَّفْصِيلُ الْكَامِلُ

Complete Guide to Juma Prayer

The Juma prayer consists of only 2 Rakats Fard (instead of the regular 4 Rakats of Zuhr prayer). It is prayed in congregation behind an Imam after the Khutba (sermon). The Juma prayer replaces the Zuhr prayer on Friday for those who attend. It is obligatory upon every adult, sane, resident Muslim male.

Essential Conditions for Juma Prayer

  • 2 Rakats Fard Only: Juma prayer is only 2 Rakats of Fard (obligatory), performed in congregation after the Khutba.
  • Must Be Led by Imam: The prayer must be led by an Imam and prayed in congregation. Individual Juma prayer at home is not valid.
  • Khutba is Essential: The Khutba (sermon) is a pillar of Juma. Without the Khutba, the Juma prayer is not valid.
  • Replaces Zuhr: The Juma prayer replaces the regular 4 Rakat Zuhr (Dhuhr) prayer on Friday for those who attend.
  • Must Be in Mosque: The Juma prayer must be performed in a mosque or designated Juma prayer area, not at home.
  • Minimum Congregation: According to most scholars, a minimum of 3 people (including the Imam) are required, though some say 40 adult males are needed.
  • Within Zuhr Time: Juma must be prayed during the time of Zuhr (after sun passes zenith until Asr time begins).
  • Must Be Resident: Travelers are not obligated to attend Juma prayer; they can pray 4 Rakats Zuhr instead.

Step-by-Step Method of Juma Prayer

FIRST RAKAT:

1. Stand in rows behind the Imam, shoulder to shoulder, with no gaps.
2. Imam says Takbir "Allahu Akbar" - raise hands to ears and say Allahu Akbar.
3. Place right hand over left hand on chest or below navel.
4. Imam recites Surah Al-Fatiha (usually loudly in Shafi'i/Maliki madhabs).
5. Imam recites another long Surah (commonly Al-Jumu'ah or Al-A'la).
6. Say Allahu Akbar and go into Ruku (bowing position).
7. In Ruku, say "Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem" (Glory be to my Lord, the Almighty) 3 times.
8. Stand up from Ruku. Imam says "Sami Allahu liman hamidah", followers say "Rabbana lakal hamd".
9. Say Allahu Akbar and go into first Sajdah (prostration).
10. In Sajdah, say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) 3 times.
11. Sit up briefly (Jalsa), then say Allahu Akbar and go into second Sajdah.
12. In second Sajdah, say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" 3 times again.
13. Say Allahu Akbar and stand up for the second Rakat.

SECOND RAKAT:

14. Imam recites Surah Al-Fatiha.
15. Imam recites another Surah (commonly Al-Munafiqun or Al-Ghashiyah).
16. Complete Ruku and two Sajdahs exactly as in first Rakat.
17. After the second Sajdah, sit for Tashahhud (At-Tahiyyat).
18. Recite At-Tahiyyat, then Durood Ibrahimi, then final Duas.
19. Turn head to the right saying "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah".
20. Turn head to the left saying "Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah".

Juma Prayer Complete! Now pray 4 Rakats Sunnah Muakkadah (2+2).

Surahs Recited in Juma Prayer

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite specific Surahs in the Juma prayer:

  • First Rakat - Option 1: Surah Al-Jumu'ah (Chapter 62 - "The Friday")
  • Second Rakat - Option 1: Surah Al-Munafiqun (Chapter 63 - "The Hypocrites")
  • First Rakat - Option 2: Surah Al-A'la (Chapter 87 - "The Most High")
  • Second Rakat - Option 2: Surah Al-Ghashiyah (Chapter 88 - "The Overwhelming")
  • Other Options: The Imam may also recite other long Surahs, but the above are most commonly recited based on authentic Sunnah.

📖 Sahih Muslim 877, Sahih Bukhari 891, Sahih Muslim 879

Special Points About Juma Prayer

  • Recitation is Loud: According to Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, the Imam recites the Quran loudly in Juma prayer. Hanafi school has different practice.
  • No Adhan After Khutba: There is no Adhan called after the Khutba ends. The Iqamah is called directly and prayer begins.
  • Stand When Imam Stands: When the Imam stands after the Khutba to lead the prayer, stand up immediately with the congregation.
  • Follow the Imam: Do not go into Ruku, Sajdah, or stand before the Imam. Follow him exactly.
  • If You Miss a Rakat: If you join late and miss one Rakat with the Imam, complete the missed Rakat after the Imam gives Salam.
  • If You Miss Both Rakats: If you arrive after the Imam completes Juma prayer, you must pray 4 Rakats of Zuhr instead of 2 Rakats Juma.
  • Women Can Attend: Women are not obligated to attend Juma, but they can attend if facilities are available. They should pray in the women's section.

Juma Salah in the Holy Cities

🕋 MAKKAH AL-MUKARRAMAH

Masjid al-Haram - The Sacred Mosque

One Prayer = 100,000 Prayers: The Prophet ﷺ said, "A prayer in my mosque (Madinah) is better than a thousand prayers elsewhere, except Masjid al-Haram, and a prayer in Masjid al-Haram is better than a hundred thousand prayers elsewhere."
Juma Prayer Timing: Juma prayer in Makkah is performed approximately 15-20 minutes after the Zuhr Adhan. The exact timing may vary slightly throughout the year.
Multiple Juma Prayers: Due to the massive crowd capacity, multiple Juma prayers are held in different sections and levels of the Haram at different times to accommodate all worshippers.
Khutba Language & Duration: The main Khutba is delivered in Arabic by the Imam of Masjid al-Haram. The Khutba typically lasts 15-20 minutes and is broadcast throughout the entire Haram via advanced speaker systems.
Capacity: After recent expansions, Masjid al-Haram can accommodate over 2 million worshippers simultaneously, especially during Ramadan, Hajj, and Umrah seasons.
Best Time to Arrive: Arrive at least 1-2 hours before the Adhan to find a good spot, especially during peak seasons (Ramadan, Hajj, school holidays). The Haram fills up very quickly on Fridays.
Mataf Area Protocol: The area immediately around the Kaaba (Mataf) is usually reserved for Tawaf, not for prayer. Juma Salah is prayed in the outer courtyard areas, upper levels, and basement levels.
Climate Control: The Haram has state-of-the-art air-conditioning systems and climate control. There are also shaded outdoor areas with misting systems for hot weather.
Accessibility: The Haram has excellent facilities for elderly and disabled worshippers, including wheelchairs, elevators, escalators, and special seating areas.
Zamzam Water: Zamzam water is available throughout the Haram from dispensers. Drink as much as you wish before and after the prayer.
Live Broadcast: The Khutba and prayer are broadcast live globally on Saudi TV channels (Quran TV, Sunnah TV), YouTube, and various Islamic apps.
Security & Safety: There is extensive security throughout the Haram for the safety of pilgrims. Follow all instructions from security personnel and emergency evacuation procedures.

🕌 MADINAH AL-MUNAWWARAH

Masjid an-Nabawi - The Prophet's Mosque

One Prayer = 1,000 Prayers: The Prophet ﷺ said, "A prayer in my mosque is better than a thousand prayers elsewhere, except Masjid al-Haram." This makes it the second holiest mosque in Islam.
Juma Prayer Timing: Juma prayer in Madinah is performed approximately 15-20 minutes after the Zuhr Adhan. The timing may vary slightly based on the season.
The Blessed Rawdah: The Rawdah (the area between the Prophet's ﷺ pulpit and his chamber) is described by the Prophet ﷺ as "a garden from the gardens of Paradise." Praying in the Rawdah carries immense reward. Access is controlled and allocated by time slots.
Khutba & Imam: The Khutba is delivered in eloquent Arabic by the Imam of Masjid an-Nabawi. The sermon is broadcast throughout the vast mosque complex via speakers.
Capacity: With its expansions, Masjid an-Nabawi can accommodate over 1 million worshippers, including the outdoor plazas and covered areas.
The Green Dome: The iconic green dome (Al-Qubbah Al-Khadra) marks the location of the Prophet's ﷺ chamber, grave, and the graves of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). It is visible from outside but not from within the prayer hall.
Original Mosque Area: The original area of the Prophet's ﷺ mosque is marked by distinctive pillars. Praying in this area is especially virtuous.
Women's Section: There are extensive, spacious sections for women with excellent facilities, clear view of the Imam (via screens), and separate entrances.
Best Time to Arrive: Arrive 1-2 hours early, especially if you want to pray in the older, more sacred sections of the mosque or access the Rawdah.
Salam to the Prophet ﷺ: After Juma prayer, many worshippers go to give Salam to the Prophet ﷺ at his chamber. Be patient as queues can be long. Say: "Assalamu alaika ya Rasoolallah" when facing the chamber.
Retractable Umbrellas: The mosque has massive automated retractable umbrellas in the courtyards that provide shade during hot weather and retract for nighttime viewing of stars.
Live Broadcast: Like Makkah, the Khutba and prayers from Madinah are broadcast live on Saudi TV channels, YouTube (Quran TV, Sunnah TV), and Islamic applications worldwide.

Essential Guidelines for Juma in Makkah & Madinah

  • Dress Code: Wear clean, modest Islamic clothing. Men: loose trousers/thobe and shirt. Women: abaya and hijab. Remove shoes at designated areas.
  • Arrive Very Early: Both mosques fill up extremely fast, especially during Ramadan, Hajj, and on Fridays. Arrive 1-2 hours before Adhan for a good spot.
  • Wudu Facilities: Both mosques have extensive, modern Wudu (ablution) facilities with thousands of taps. Perform Wudu before entering if you haven't already.
  • Keep Mobile Silent: Silence your mobile phone completely before entering the mosque. Taking photos during prayer is not allowed.
  • Don't Block Pathways: Never sit in walkways, doorways, or block the passage of others. Leave pathways clear for movement.
  • Listen Attentively to Khutba: Focus completely on the Khutba even if you don't understand Arabic. Listen with respect and contemplation. Do not talk at all.
  • Stay Until End: Remain seated until the prayer is completely finished and the Imam has given both Salams. Do not rush to leave.
  • Be Extra Patient: There will be massive crowds, especially during peak times. Exercise patience, kindness, and help others. This is part of worship.
  • Make Abundant Dua: These are the most blessed places on earth. Utilize every moment for sincere duas for yourself, family, and all Muslims worldwide.
  • Personal Belongings: Keep your belongings secure but minimal. Both mosques have designated areas for shoes. Don't bring valuables.
  • Health & Comfort: Bring water, especially in hot weather. Both mosques have water fountains and Zamzam dispensers. Elderly should use wheelchairs if needed.
  • Follow Security Instructions: Both mosques have extensive security for everyone's safety. Follow all instructions from security personnel and mosque staff.

Special Note on Ramadan & Hajj Seasons

During Ramadan and Hajj season, both Makkah and Madinah mosques reach maximum capacity. Juma prayers are even more crowded than usual. Plan to arrive 2-3 hours early during these peak times. The rewards are multiplied, and the spiritual atmosphere is unparalleled. Despite the crowds, the experience of praying Juma in these blessed places during these blessed times is truly life-changing. Make the most of every moment!
